Week 6: Finding Your Anchor
2026 Word: Bloom
Winter: Root & Rest
Book: All It Takes Is A Goal
I often look for ways to stay on track, finding what will hold my attention, a prompt that I can anchor my goals to. Sometimes my thoughts get caught on negative anchors, things that impede direction, where I must learn to let go. Other time, the anchor is a beacon of light that directs me in the direction I need to go.
A few years ago, I purchased an old-time clock that if running would slowly collapse into a new time. Without batteries it is my anchor, with the time reading 12:07, which anchors me to my son Ryan’s birthday. My cue to share his story, and our story of grief and survival. An opportunity to help others through loss.
You do not survive the loss of a child; you instead learn how to manage the pain and sadness while excavating your way towards hope and gratitude. Each day is one step forward, while looking back at what was. Untangling memories from years ago while still curious to what could have been.
Loss can be the anchor that drags you down, or one that allows you to remember with love and grace. On February it will be 33-years since Ryan died, and as I write this story about him and our grief, I noticed the clock that anchors me to my chair reminding me to show up and write.
